Wisent-wilderness on the Rothaarsteig
The “Wisent-wilderness on the Rothaarsteig” gives an insight into a unique Western Europe species conservation project. The wild Wisents live here in the Rothhargebirge since 2013, living freely in the forrests on a huge territory.
However, they are extremly rare to find, mostly by chance. So the wisent enclouser was created as a “peephole” into the project. In a 20 hectare and wildley natrual area lives the second wisent group, an unusal animal ad also a fantastic nature experience for the hole family. With formation from rocks, sources, hollows, forrest and valleys the “Wisent-wilderness” offers visitors an excellent walking experience as well as a possibility of an amazing animal observation for the hole family. A badger's burrow and a crossing of a stream kidnaps visitors into the beautiful world of nature.
A three-kilometre trail leads through the home of the wisent and allows visitor to admire the mighty animals up close. The tour through the the natural trail takes about 2 til 3 hours. Suitable sturdy shoes are requiered.
For visitors with reduced mobility and for guests with prams is the three km long trail not suitable. Alternatively, there is a largely at grade and fortified farm road (about 600 metres in length) to reduced prices. From here there is only a limited view of the terrain.
More about the unique species conservation project can be found on the website of the wisent world.
